How to Select a Laptop

There are a few different elements to consider when choosing your laptop.  The biggest factors are:

  • Which operating system you want to select?
  • Screen size and weight ?
  • What kind of processor?
  • What memory and hard drive size do you want?

Which Operating System

The two most common laptop operating systems are Windows and Apple’s Mac OS X Mountain Lion, with about 80% of laptops running Windows.  There is a broader selection of software available for Windows based PCs.

Weight

If you travel frequently for work then the weight of your laptop may be a big factor in your choice of computer.  Laptops can range from an ultra slim 2lbs or under right up to 8lbs or 9lbs.  Typically a high specification laptop that is very light will cost significantly more.

Screen size

Laptop screens range from 11 inches in diameter to more than 16 inches or more. Your choice will depend on how you expect to use the laptop – e.g. primarily for work, or gaming or a mixture of both.

Processor

The performance of a laptop is determined by the speed of its processor (the laptop’s “engine”) as well as the amount of memory and the hard disk size.  Processors are classified as single core, dual core and quad core.  Your choice will depend on how you plan to use the laptop (e.g. for gaming, watching videos, email etc.). The staff at MicroPro ® can show you a range of options so you can compare performance and price across laptops and brands.

Memory and Hard Drive

Today’s laptops commonly have memory ranging from 2GB to 8GB.  Generally, the more memory you have the faster your laptop will perform.  Hard disk size determines how much content (documents, images and video) you can store on your laptop.  Our staff can explain the options and suggest what specification suits your needs.
